Application Fees and Acceptance Deposits

Application Fees and Acceptance Deposits

Application Fees

Application Fees are non-refundable Systemwide fees charged to all applicants for admission with maximum fee levels set by the the Office of the President. Campuses or Programs can opt to charge a lower amount than the published maximums. Individual programs can also request augmentation of the maximum.

Fee Approval Process

Application fees are within the purview of the President, pursuant to Regents' Standing Order 100.4(g) and, subsequently, and cannot be established or increased without her approval.

To change or request new application fee, program must submit a request to Budget & Resource Management (BRM). BRM will review the proposal and draft the fee request letter to the UC President for Chancellor’s approval and signature. BRM will coordinate with the Budget Analysis & Planning office at UCOP to formally submit the request. BRM will receive the approval from UCOP, and notify the program.

Please note that, in the letter to the President, the program should provide justification (a reasonable relation between the proposed app fee level and its purpose) for the application fee level requested.

Example:

  • Market analysis showing application fee levels at comparators
  • Either to help pay increased costs related to remaining compettitive in recruiting students or help providing financial support to their admissions and outreach staff

OR

  • Market analysis showing application fee levels at comparators
  • Pay for administration costs since the program planned to begin employing their own application processing

Acceptance Deposits

A non-refundable admission deposit, also known as a Statement of Intent to Register. Students in programs with an approved deposit are required to pay the deposit at the time of their acceptance of admission. The deposit is applied to their first quarter tuition or program fee (depending on the type of program). Programs adopt this charge in order to ensure maximum enrollment per cohort, which allows opportunity for wait-listed students, should an accepted student decline admission.

Fee Approval Process

Programs submit request to Budget & Resource Management (BRM). BRM will review the proposal and draft the request letter to the UC President for Chancellor’s approval and signature. BRM coordinates with the Budget Analysis & Planning office at UCOP to formally submit the request. BRM will receive the approval from UCOP, notify the program and coordinate implementation with the Registrar. Also, before the President approves, UCOP will send all campuses a notice that the deposit was requested, soliciting any objections to implementing it and giving the campuses with the same or similar degree program the opportunity to be included in the approval.
