Definition

A fellowship that supports the research of a registered UCSF graduate student who will remain a student in good standing for the duration of the award. The fellowship may include one or more of the following: stipend, tuition, research allowance, travel funds.

For off-site internship fellowships, the student may go on a leave of absence for the award period; however, they may not be registered.

Examples
  • An individual graduate student fellowship from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).
  • An award from a non-profit agency such as the American Heart Association (AHA) paying stipend, portion of health insurance, and a research allowance to a UCSF graduate student.

Individual graduate student extramural fellowships are reviewed, approved, and submitted by the Graduate Division when required by the funding agency.

Note: Some fellowships are awarded directly to the fellow and require no institutional involvement.
