Mandatory Fees

Mandatory Fees

Tuition, Student Services Fee, and Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition are Mandatory Fees charged to all registered students in the state-supported UC instructional programs, in addition to other applicable charges. These fees are approved by the UC Board of Regents. Fee schedule for the next academic year is published in April/ May by UCOP.

Tuition

  • Tuition levels are set by the UC Regents
  • In July 2021, the Regents approved a multi-year plan establishing cohort-based Tuition for undergraduate enrollment, meaning that tuition will remain constant for returning students and increases will occur only for newly-enrolled students
  • Consistent with Regental policy, a portion of Tuition is used to provide student financial aid (40% and 50% of any revenue increase generated from graduate academic and graduate professional students, respectively)
  • The balance of Tuition funds are pooled with other sources in the Core Financial Plan and used to provide general support for educational programs, academic support, and administration

Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition

  • Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition (NRST) levels are set by the UC Regents
  • While rates differ for graduate academic and graduate professional students, they are uniform across all UC Campuses
  • Non-Residential Supplemental Tuition does not have a financial aid component
  • UCSF pools NRST revenue with other Core Financial Plan revenues and are used to provide general support for educational programs, academic support, and administration

Student Services Fee

  • Student Services Fee (SSF) are set by the UC Regents
  • For graduate students, the Regents approved adjustments to Student Services Fee pegged to inflation, beginning in 2022-23 and applying to all graduate students rather than specific cohorts
  • Consistent with Regental policy, a portion of the Student Services Fee is used to provide student financial aid (40% and 50% of any revenue increase generated from graduate academic and graduate professional students, respectively)
  • The balance of Student Services Fee funds are used to support services beneficial to students, including those related to the physical and psychological health and well-being of students, social and cultural activities and programs, campus life and campus community, and educational and career support services
  • Allocations of funds are approved by the Chancellor and guided by the recommendations of the Chancellor’s Student Services Fee Advisory Committee (SSFAC) annually
