Definition

  • An award that supports the training (usually by payment of a stipend) of an individual who has been or will be appointed through the Graduate Division as a Postdoctoral Scholar, or who has an appointment through a Graduate Medical Education (GME) program as a clinical fellow, and who will retain that appointment for the duration of the award.
  • With private sponsors, the term “fellowship” can be significantly less restrictive than under federal definitions.
Examples
  • An F32 grant from NIH
  • Individual postdoctoral fellowship from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
  • Individual postdoctoral fellowship from Roche Corp. (Note: F31 is the NIH activity code for Individual Predoctoral Fellowships)
Overhead Consideration
  • None in most cases.
  • If a sponsor pays overhead, it is credited to the “Institutional Allowance.”
  • Terms for overhead are being defined; UCOP policy has stated that F&A should be applied when possible (non-federal sponsors).
  • Financial aid paid directly to an individual as a stipend is exempt from the indirect cost base. This exemption does not apply to fellowships that provide salaries, wages, or honoraria to UCSF employees.
